  • Lubrication and maintenance of healthy skin

  • Reproductive function

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS?
Essential fatty acids are beneficial fats and oils, and are the precursors to prostaglandins, which are involved in hormone and metabolic function. They are required for cell structure and function and are an integral part of energy production for the cells. EFA are important for the immune system, as well as lipid metabolism, skin lubrication, transmission of nerve impulses, reproductive health and blood clotting mechanism. They help prevent damage from harmful fats and help reduce serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They also have anti-mutagenic properties, as well as anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal elements. Since they cannot be synthesized in the body, they must be obtained from foods or by supplementation. There are two basic categories of essential fatty acids:

Some of the key Omega-3 fatty acids are EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid), and DHA (Docosahexaenonic acid). These are found in cold fresh-water fish (salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines), which have a higher content fat and therefore have higher amounts of the Omega-3 essential fatty acids. Eating several servings weekly of salmon or other fatty fish is important; however most individuals do not include sufficient servings to provide all the essential Omega-3 fatty acids for a good nutritional program and cardiovascular health. Canola, flaxseed and walnut oil also contain an Omega-3 oil, ALA (alpha linolenic acid); however the fatty acids in these oils will be destroyed if subjected to heat. Also ALA the Omega-3 fatty acid found in all vegetable products must be converted to EPA & DHA before it is useful in inflammatory skin conditions.  I; (Dr Moribund), have observed that those with eczema and psoriasis are not helped by ALA, the Omega-3 found in flax seed & other vegetable products but are helped by the fish oil derived EPA & DHA therefore I have deduced that those with inflammatory skin conditions may have difficulty make EPA & DHA from ALA .in their livers.   EPA helps decrease serum triglycerides, and arteriosclerosis, and may reduce diabetic nephropathy.

Omega-6, high in GLA (gamma-linolenic-acid), LA (linolenic), and AA (arachidonic acid), are found in unsaturated plant oils such as borage, primrose, as well as nuts and sunflower and safflower oils. The GLA essential fatty acids convert to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DHLA), which produce beneficial prostaglandins. They help reduce elevated plasma cholesterol, triglyceride levels and PMS symptoms, and are important for skin and the immune system.

WHAT IS BORAGE OIL?
Borage oil comes from the seed of the Borage (Boraginaceae) plant, which is found in eastern U.S., southern Europe and northern Africa. This oil is rich in the Omega-6 essential fatty acids, and is important for skin lubrication, being helpful for dry skin, eczema and psoriasis. It is also important for its effect on cholesterol, as well as irritable bowel syndrome, and reproductive health.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TAKING ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS WITH AMINO ACIDS?
Essential fatty acids work along with amino acids to produce many of the functions in the body, and a balance of both is necessary for proper biochemistry and production of cellular energy. Stress increases the need for both essential fatty acids and amino acids. A resent study noted L-Arginine supplementation increased levels of EFA, indicating L-Arginine has an effect on EFA metabolism.

SOME INDICATIONS FOR ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS
Lowering of serum cholesterol levels and reducing LDL and triglyceride levels.

  • Coronary heart disease

  • Eczema, psoriasis and dry skin

  • Hypertension

  • Improving immune system function and providing support for immune system disorders such as AIDS, EBV, LUPUS etc.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis

  • Impotence

  • PMS symptoms

  • In addition EFA may have beneficial effects on allergies, asthma, migraine headaches, MS, malaria, and cancer. Studies noted EFA and their metabolites can kill tumor cells both in vitro and in vivo.

  • Deficiencies include miscarriages in pregnancies, sterility in men, growth retardation, wound healing problems, and tingling sensations in arms and legs. A recent study at Deaconess Med. Cent., Harvard Med. School notes an EFA deficiency in ESLD (end-stage liver disease) patients and propose supplementation will lead to improvement in their clinical condition.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF COMBINING EPA (Omega-3) AND GLA (Omega-6) ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS?
They work synergistically and convert more quickly to DHLA producing a higher percentage of "beneficial" prostaglandins, then if given separately. The combination of both types of essential fatty acids also reduces the amount of DHLA that can converts to AA on a separate metabolic pathway, which can produce "negative" prostaglandins. The results of combining the Omega-3 and Omega-6 EFA will produce faster and longer effects on many functions including the immune system, as well as having a positive effect on other conditions, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MONTIFF PURE EFA SOFT GELS?

  • Montiff supplies the purest essential fatty acids available, in a soft gel.

  • This complex combines the Omega-3, EPA (from marine lipids) and Omega-6, GLA (from high quality borage oil) as well as DHA. Vitamin E is included for its antioxidant properties to protect against free radical formation.

Amino Acids - Are the building blocks of protein. Your body is primarily made of protein.  And protein in turn, is made up of chains of amino acids What distinguishes all amino acids is that they all have a group, (amine group), made of 1 atom of nitrogen & 2 atoms of hydrogen. (NH2)

Free-Form Amino Acids - Individual amino acids that are  unattached to each other or anything else & therefore able to be immediately absorbed into the blood stream with no digestion necessary. Since, unlike proteins, free-form amino acids require absolutely no digestion, they can be absorbed by anyone no matter how old they may be or the condition of their digestive system.  Also, unlike proteins, free-form amino acids can be taken on an empty stomach such as right before a workout.  Whereas proteins have to have a mass of food sufficient to stimulate the release of digestive juices. This is why most protein supplements are presented as blender drinks.  Free-form amino acids are not to be confused with so-called "predigested protein."

Negative nitrogen balance - The condition of excreting more amino acids & protein than one is taking in. This makes it difficult to maintain ones body since the body's tissues are mainly made of protein & amino acids which require constant maintenance & repair.

Precursors - the substance from which another substance is made.

Protein - Chains of some combination of the 20 so-called "proteogenic" amino acids. (proteogenic means to generate protein). In other words their are only 20  amino acids from which all proteins in all organic life both animal & vegetable are made. Not all 20 are in every protein, but nothing else but some portion of the 20 proteogenic amino acids in repetitive long chains often approx. 100,000 amino acids long are what all proteins in all life are made from.

Secretalogical cells - Cells that secrete hormones.
