Glossary

Column

Amino Acids - Are the building blocks of protein. Your body is primarily made of protein.  And protein in turn, is made up of chains of amino acids What distinguishes all amino acids is that they all have a group, (amine group), made of 1 atom of nitrogen & 2 atoms of hydrogen. (NH2).

Cytology - Cellular activity.

Editors' note:   We would be pleased to provide by e-mail a list of licensed practitioners; limited to women practitioners if you like; either M.D.'s &/or N.D.'s (Naturopaths) who use Earth's Harvest suppositories in their practice; as close as possible to your location if you request via e-mail.

Free-Form Amino Acids - Individual amino acids that are  unattached to each other or anything else & therefore able to be immediately absorbed into the blood stream with no digestion necessary. Since, unlike proteins, free-form amino acids require absolutely no digestion, they can be absorbed by anyone no matter how old they may be or the condition of their digestive system.  Also, unlike proteins, free-form amino acids can be taken on an empty stomach such as right before a workout.  Whereas proteins have to have a mass of food sufficient to stimulate the release of digestive juices. This is why most protein supplements are presented as blender drinks.  Free-form amino acids are not to be confused with so-called "predigested protein."

Negative nitrogen balance - The condition of excreting more amino acids & protein than one is taking in. This makes it difficult to maintain ones body since the body's tissues are mainly made of protein & amino acids which require constant maintenance & repair.

Precursors - the substance from which another substance is made.

Protein - Chains of some combination of the 20 so-called "proteogenic" amino acids. (proteogenic means to generate protein). In other words their are only 20  amino acids from which all proteins in all organic life both animal & vegetable are made. Not all 20 are in every protein, but nothing else but some portion of the 20 proteogenic amino acids in repetitive long chains often approx. 100,000 amino acids long are what all proteins in all life are made from.

Secretalogical cells - Cells that secrete hormones.

Using Herb & Vitamin Suppositories

Herbal and Vitamin Suppositories are a natural alternative to the various synthetic medical products. They offer both practitioner and patient another choice for a wide variety of vaginal and rectal conditions. These products may be the best choice when other products are contraindicated or the patient prefers a natural product.

Herb and vitamin suppositories made in a cocoa butter base ensure that the whole product is natural. Cocoa butter is a vegetable oil from Theobroma cacao plant and is one of the longest listed natural products in both the United States Pharmacopoeia and the National Formulary. It is emollient, nutritive and protective on excoriated skin and mucous membranes. Cocoa butter melts at body temperature making it the ideal vehicle for the active ingredients in the vaginal and rectal suppositories. Earth Botanical Harvest suppositories are made by infusing the herbs into the cocoa butter or by adding herbal extracts to the cocoa butter. No raw herb material is left which could cause discomfort in the vagina or rectum.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES

Use of a sanitary pad is recommended with all vaginal suppositories to protect clothing and bedding. Vaginal suppositories are best inserted at bedtime to ensure that the suppository is kept in contact with the vaginal and cervical tissue for the longest time. Patients should be instructed to insert the suppository well into the vagina to make sure it reaches the cervix and is not expelled. All suppositories should be kept away from heat and preferable in a cool, dry place as to prevent any melting. Refrigeration is recommended for most suppositories. Patients should be reminded to store them carefully to prevent melting.

The following information is provided as a guideline for practitioners. Information on herbs and vitamins will assist you in making a choice of product

VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES LISTED ALPHABETICALLY BELOW

.

CALENDULA-VITAMIN A

A combination of Calendula officinalis with its Flavonoids and Carotenoids, and Vitamin A as Palmitate for its tissue healing properties. Weiss (Herbal Medicine 1988, p.334) calls Calendula a well-tolerated wound healer. CALENDULA- VITAMIN A suppositories are used in conjunction with either Herbal Vaginal Suppositories or V.P. Compound in a cervical atypia or dysplasia protocol. These suppositories might also be used with conditions of irritation, fissures or ulcerations.  Editors' note: cervical atypia & dysplasia are conditions for which a woman would be well advised to consult a doctor.  We would be pleased to provide via e-mail a list of licensed practitioners; limited to women practitioners if you like; either M.D.'s & N.D.'s (Naturopaths) who use Earth's Harvest suppositories in their practice; as close as possible to your location if you request via e-mail.

CIMICIFUGA - DIOSCOREA & VITAMIN E

The addition of herbs traditionally used for menopausal symptoms to the Vitamin E suppositories was done at the request of a naturopathic physician. Cimicifuga racemosa (Black Cohosh) was shown in one European study (Therapeutikon 1984 1.23) to have effects similar to estrogen on vaginal cytology.  Another study (Planta Medica 1991,57:420) showed constituents of Cimicifuga racemosa bind estrogen receptors. Dioscorea villosa (Dong Quai) has been used traditionally by herbalists in states of estrogen and progesterone deficiency.

ESSENTIAL OIL PLUS

A formulation similar to the depletion pack. Both Hydrastis canadensis (Goldenseal) and Lomatium dissectum (Lomatium) arc effective against many microbial pathogens, as are the Essential Oils of Tea Tree, Thuja and Bitter Orange. Occasionally a mild burning sensation will be experienced with initial use, especially if there is a lot of irritation of the tissue. Practitioners use these with other suppositories in a protocol for cervical atypia, dysplasia and infections.

HERBAL VAGINAL

Formulated by a naturopathic physician for use in her own practice. An herbal combination of eight herbs selected for their antimicrobial properties of Achillea millefolium (Yarrow), Calendula, Echinacea, Mahonia aquifolium (Oregon Grape), Usnea, astringent properties of Achillea, Calendula, Uva Ursi and demulcent properties of (Althea officinalis (Marshmallow), Symphytum officinale (Comfrey). HERBAL VAGINAL is primarily used in conjunction with other suppositories in a protocol for cervical atypia and dysplasia. These may also be helpful for infections, especially if there is much irritation.

HYDRASTIS (Goldenseal) VAGINAL

Hydrastis canadensis (Goldenseal) extract in a cocoa butter base. The antimicrobial action of Hydrastis is from the alkaloid, berberine. Berberine has been shown to be effective against many microbes including bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. (AMIN, SUBBAIAJ, ABBASI.  BERBERINE SULFATE:  ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY, BIOASSAY AND MODE OF ACTION. Can. J. Micro. 1969: 15:1067-1076). Main uses by practitioners are for bacterial and Candida infections.  Editors Note: Hydrastis suppositories can be a little irritating to the tissues if this occurs we suggest following with the Herbal Vaginal Suppositories which are soothing & restorative, though not as strongly anti-microbial as the Hydrastis.

L. ACIDOPHILUS

These vaginal suppositories provide a convenient way to re-establish the normal balance of the vaginal microflora. The Lactobacillus acidophilus strain we use has a high attachment ration (bacteria/human epithelial cell) insuring successful colonization of the vagina. Lactobacilli that adhere well to vaginal epithelial cells competitively exclude other bacteria. L. Acidophilus is able to metabolize glycogen to produce lactic acid. This is an important characteristic since the vaginal epithelial cells secrete glycogen and lactic acid is crucial to maintaining an acidic environment, which inhibits other bacteria growth. L. Acidophilus is also able to produce hydrogen peroxides, which inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of lactobacilli in returning the vaginal microflora to normal. Lactobacillus has also been found to a safe and effective treatment for bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy

 TEA TREE OIL

Australian Essential Oil of Melaleuca alternifolia (2~a Tree) in a cocoa butter base; the first choice for Candida and trichomonas. Balaiche, {TREATMENT OF VAGINAL INFECTIONS OF CANDIDA ALBICANS WITH ESSENTIAL OIL OF MELALEUCA ALTERNIFOLIA, Phytotherapie 1985 15} found 21 of 28 patients with Candida albicans vaginitis treated with a nightly Tea Tree Oil suppository were free of infection after one month, the remaining seven patients were free of symptoms. Pena (MELALEUCA ALTERNIFOLIA OIL, ITS USE FOR TRICHOMONAL VAGINITIS AND OTHER VAGINAL INFECTIONS. OB GYN 1962 19; 6:793-95) treated 120 cases of trichomonas or Candida vaginitis with Tea Tree Oil, treatment was as effective as a standard anti-trichomonal suppository. A letter in Lancet (1991 337:300) reported a patient treated an anecdotal case of bacterial vaginosis with a five-day course of Tea Tree Oil suppositories, which resulted in normal bacterial flora one month later at retest. Both Pena and Balaiche remarked that Tea Tree Oil was well tolerated by patients, causing little or no discomfort.

VITAMIN E

Information on the use of VITAMIN E VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES comes from Ant (DIABETIC VULVOVAGINITIS TREATED WITH VITAMIN E SUPPOSITORIES. Am J OB GYN 1954 67:407-10), whose clinical results with 24 cases of vulvovaginitis showed an excellent response to VITAMIN E suppositories. He surmised the action of the Vitamin E was to increase the barrier against infection and stimulation of normal vaginal mucosa and vulvae skin. He theorizes that both diabetic and senile vulvovaginitis are symptoms of Vitamin E deficiency and replacement would correct the condition. Anecdotal experience of alternative practitioners with Vitamin E suppositories in atrophic (senile) vaginitis is positive. For women in whom estrogen replacement therapy is contraindicated, or for those patients who choose not to use estrogen, Vitamin E Suppositories can provide a viable alternative for relief of vaginal dryness.

V.P. COMPOUND SUPPOSITORIES

Vag Pak Suppositories provide an easy and convenient method for administering Vag Pak Compound treatment. Each suppository contains Anhydrous magnesium sulfate, VM12O (iron astringent compound), Hydrastis canadensis (Goldenseal) root extract, Thuja occidentalis Essential Oil and Citrus vulgaris (Bitter Orange) Essential Oil in a cocoa butter base. These suppositories may be used in conjunction with HERBAL VAGINAL SUPPOS1TORIES AND CALENDULA-V1TAMIN-A SUPPOSITORIES in a Cervical Atypia, Dysplasia or Condyloma protocol. Two V.P. COMPOUND SUPPOSITORIES ARE EQUIVALENT to one tablespoon of V.P. Compound.
