WHAT ARE AMINO ACIDS?

Amino acids are what protein is made of, and protein is primarily what the body is made of.  Amino acids are the individual crystalline molecules that make up protein, similar to the way letters make up words.  Which is to say that protein is no more than chains of amino acids.  There are 20 basic amino acids that produce all of the over 1600 proteins in the body and for that matter the same 20 amino acids are what all protein in all life - both animal and vegetable - are made from.   They are called the proteogenic-(to generate protein), amino acids.   They make up 3/4ths of the body’s solid material, and are found in muscle tissue, organs, blood and skin. Amino acids also make hormones, enzymes, and vitamins, and are essential for a healthy immune system and proper neurological-(brain), functions. - In fact, all neurotransmitters except one are made from single amino acids and therefore amino acid supplementation can have a beneficial effect on short term memory loss and mental function.   These 20 proteogenic amino acids are usually divided into 2 groups - the 8 essential amino acids that your body is not able to make and must obtain from food, and the 12 non-essential amino acids that it is thought that the body can make as long as it gets the 8 essential amino acids.  However the older one gets the less efficient one gets at being able to convert the essential amino acids to the non-essential amino acids.  Which is to say as one gets older one may be able to make some of the non-essential amino acids but progressively less and less.  Since in order for the body to perform its constant repair and maintenance activities it needs to have a supply of all 20 of the basic amino acids, the gradual loss of efficiency in making the 12 supposedly non-essential amino acids could contribute to the gradual loss of the ability of the body to repair and maintain itself.  So then we have a situation where in a progressive way as one gets older, all 20 of the 20 basic amino acids are as had been said by Don Tyson - conditionally essential.   Since Don has been doing blood & urine assays for amino acids & interpreting the results for doctors for 40 years, he should know.  It is necessary to replace amino acids constantly to nourish the body, and repair and regenerate tissue. Amino acids are generally ingested in the food we eat, however, because of processed foods, inadequate diets, and food restrictive programs, proper balance is rarely achieved and supplementation is advisable. Especially during illness, trauma, surgery and stress more amino acids are required than can be obtained by food alone.  Another consideration is that as we get older our bodily systems become less efficient at making the conversions from the so-called essential amino acids to the so-called non-essential amino acids.  In the chronically ill, they can help reverse negative nitrogen balance, and help prevent tissue wasting. ALL- BASIC is the recommended choice to help insure optimum balance and provide basic amino acid requirements.

WHY THE IMMUNE SYSTEM MAKES FREE-FORM AMINO ACIDS NECESSARY:

In the case of proteins, your immune system can recognize self from other.  This is because your immune system will attack any foreign protein under the assumption that all foreign protein is part of an invading disease-causing organism-(disease-causing organisms are known as a pathogens).  For this reason, your immune system would be attacking the food that you eat  since your food contains foreign protein were it not for the fact that you also have a digestive system.  And that is why our digestive systems must break down all protein in the food that we eat into the individual amino acids that make them up because foreign proteins such as those found in food are not permitted to cross the gut wall from the digestive track into the blood stream.  So the digestive system must break down the foreign proteins in the food that we eat into the individual amino acids that make it up, (known as Free-Form Amino Acids).   These Free-Form Amino Acids are then permitted across the gut wall into the blood stream.  Once inside the body these individual Free-Form Amino Acids are then put back together or reassembled into your own unique proteins recognized by your immune system.  That is why in Criminology today detectives can use DNA testing by taking a scrap of skin, hair, blood, sweat, or tears, & identify who it is from by testing the proteins since everyone's are different.  This is also why amino acid supplements made with free-form amino acids are immediately absorbable with no digestion necessary.

Glossary

Amino Acids - are the building blocks of protein. Your body is primarily made of protein.  And protein in turn, is made up of chains of amino acids What distinguishes all amino acids is that they all have a group, (amine group), made of 1 atom of nitrogen & 2 atoms of hydrogen. (NH2)

Free-Form Amino Acids - Individual amino acids that are  unattached to each other or anything else & therefore able to be immediately absorbed into the blood stream with no digestion necessary. Since, unlike proteins, free-form amino acids require absolutely no digestion, they can be absorbed by anyone no matter how old they may be or the condition of their digestive system.  Also, unlike proteins, free-form amino acids can be taken on an empty stomach such as right before a workout.  Whereas proteins have to have a mass of food sufficient to stimulate the release of digestive juices. This is why most protein supplements are presented as blender drinks.  Free-form amino acids are not to be confused with so-called "predigested protein." which is not really predigested but actually partially digested.

Negative nitrogen balance - The condition of excreting more amino acids & protein than one is taking in. This makes it difficult to maintain ones body & body weight since the body's tissues are mainly made of protein & amino acids which require constant maintenance & repair.

Precursors - the substance from which another substance is made.

Protein - Chains of some combination of the 20 so-called "proteogenic" amino acids. (proteogenic means to generate protein). In other words their are only 20  amino acids from which all proteins in all organic life both animal & vegetable are made. Not all 20 are in every protein, but nothing else but some portion of the 20 proteogenic amino acids in repetitive long chains often approx. 100,000 amino acids long are what all proteins in all life are made from.

Proteogenic Amino Acids - The 20 amino acids that  generate protein

Secretalogical cells - Cells that secrete hormones.
